Gira Center Lab Hours

First floor Gira Center Computing Labs are currently closed to minimize contamination of surfaces.

Students can still use the 24x7 computing lab located in Gira Center 133. See below for more information about this lab.

Gira Center Computing Labs

24 x 7 Computing Lab

The University maintains a 24x7 computing lab that provides students with 24 hour access to University maintained computers and a printer.

Where is it?

The lab is located in room 133 of the Gira Center and is handicap accessible.

Safe and Secured

Students must use their FSU Student ID to enter the lab after building hours. The entrance is located directly across from Dunkle Hall. The lab is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week by security cameras.

Computers & Services

The 24x7 lab features 32 computers – most being Windows computers with a few Apple iMacs. These computers have much of the same software as all other computers on campus including specialized software related to specific departments. A black and white printer is available in this lab, however, there are no scanning services.

To verify availability of software or to report a problem, contact the FSU IT Help Desk at 301.687.7777.

Computing Labs for Teaching

(4) computer labs are located on the first floor of the Gira Center in Rooms 122, 127A, 127B, and 134. Labs 127A and 127B can be combined to form one 60-seat lab.

  • Labs are open to students, faculty, and staff of the University.
  • Labs may be reserved for class.
  • Labs 122, 127A, and 127B contain Windows computers. Lab 134 contains Macintosh computers.
  • Each lab has handicap accessible workstations.
  • Lab computers require logging on with an active FSU username and password.

Lab Usage Policy: No Food or Drink in the computing labs

Gira Center Computing Counter

Bring your laptop, bring your tablet. Our mobile computing counter in the Gira Center allows you to work from your own device. Wireless access and scanning are available. The Counter is accessible during normal Gira Center building hours. (Located next to Help Desk in Gira Center 123)

Printing Services

A high-quality black and white laser printer and scanner is located next to the IT Help Desk in Gira Center 123. Color laser printing for students is available for a small fee in the Gira Center printing area next to the IT Help Desk (Gira Center 123) and, for large print jobs, through the Mail and Printing Services Office in the Hitchins Building.

Request the Installation of Software

It’s not too soon to start planning your computer lab and classroom software requirements for the semesters ahead. It is imperative that we receive your software requests at least two months prior. Last minute installation requests before the start of a semester do not allow sufficient time to complete.

NOTE: This process is NOT for a request to PURCHASE software through Tech Funds or any other means. This is a request to INSTALL software in classrooms & labs that has already been or will be purchased. For any specialized software, you will be asked to provide licensing documentation.

Follow this procedure to ensure that labs and classrooms are adequately prepared for your classes.

  1. Review list below of standard installed software.
  2. Determine what additional software and versions you will need.
  3. Determine if your software is dependent upon other software and include the additional software in your request.
  4. Submit a Helpdesk ticket and select Request Type Software > Installation > Classroom or Lab. If possible have one person from your department compile a software list and submit one ticket. If needed, our Helpdesk staff can assist you with creating a ticket. They can be reached at 301.687.7777.

Request Special Software Installation or Class Accounts

Special software needed for specific classes can be installed for student use. Only officially licensed FSU software will be installed. Proof of license or Public Domain status is required.

The instructor is responsible for contacting the Office of Information Technology at 301.687.7777 to request the installation of special software at least three weeks in advance. Additional time may be needed if software must be ordered prior to installation. Class software installed at the instructor's request remains on the network for the duration of the class.

Each computer user must have access to a personal or class account in order to use lab or personal computers and some FSU computing services (such as e-mail). If special access accounts are (or may) be needed, it is the responsibility of the instructor to contact the Office of Information Technology at 301.687.7777 at least two weeks in advance to arrange the creation of these accounts
